Foundation Programs
The Alabama Power Foundation also offers our own grant programs. Additional information and application forms for each program are available for download.
Good Roots
Alabama Power has been connected to communities across the state in more ways than just supplying power since our founding over a century ago. The company believes that vibrant communities and a healthy environment are important to the quality of life in Alabama. Trees are key to this. Recent studies show tree-shaded neighborhoods can be 3 to 6 degrees cooler than treeless ones. Such shade helps save energy and makes our neighborhoods appealing and beautiful.
With this in mind, the Good Roots grant program, an Alabama Power Foundation initiative, in partnership with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, will supply up to $1,000 per grant to purchase trees for planting in cities, towns, communities and non-profit organizations across the state.
The Good Roots Program is designed to help keep Alabama beautiful and vibrant. The trees must be used in public areas—to enhance a park, add a canopy over the street, or help shade a hot parking lot. They can be used around schoolyards, churches and libraries; but can't be used by an individual or at a residence.
The Alabama Power Foundation is also using Good Roots to help replant tornado-torn areas around the state. One way we are doing this is through our support of the Alabama Tree Recovery Campaign, a two-year effort to plant saplings in neighborhoods where trees once stood. The campaign is in partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Arbor Day Foundation.

Gateway Grants
Alabama Power prides itself on its ability to help communities across the state and nothing makes a better statement than a well-designed entrance. So, to help Alabama communities of all sizes put their best foot forward, the Alabama Power Foundation is pleased to announce the Gateway grant program.
As a part of the 2012 Gateway program, the foundation will supply up to $2,000 per grant to purchase materials for signage to greet visitors to cities, towns and communities across the state. The Gateway Program is designed to help beautify our communities and create a welcoming statement. Suitable locations must be highly visible and a logical entry into the community.
The grant is for signage only and can’t be used for landscape materials or design services. If the project is extensive and requires more than just signage, you will be asked to supply sources of other funding and applicable designs as a part of the grant process to ensure the success of the project.
We are excited to launch the Gateway initiative this spring to help communities hit by last year’s tornados. Well-designed community signage can become a boon to growth and show progress as some of the hardest hit areas work to rebuild.
